Digital Flow Meter for Oil: High Viscosity Positive Displacement System Sizing Probes

Quick Answer: For oil above 100 cP, a digital positive displacement flow meter gives stable readings. Oval gear meters from Silver Instruments handle diesel, heavy fuel, lube oil, and palm oil from 1 cP to 100000 cP. Send viscosity in cP, pipe size in DN, flow range in kg/h, and temperature in °C for a sizing probe recommendation.

Oil flow measurement changes as viscosity rises. Turbine meters overrun at low flow. Mag meters cannot read non-conductive oil. Positive displacement catches each pocket of fluid. That is why a digital flow meter for oil often uses oval gear or gear pump internals.

Silver Instruments supplies these meters in DN10 to DN200. Accuracy reaches ±0.2 percent of reading and repeatability sits near ±0.03 percent. A local LCD display shows total and rate. Standard output is 4-20 mA HART with pulse. Modbus RTU is optional.

High Viscosity Positive Displacement Sizing Probes

In practice, a sizing probe is not a physical part. It is the set of process values we use to size the meter. Most engineers skip this part and send only pipe diameter. Then the meter arrives with the wrong gear material or seal.

A complete sizing probe includes fluid name, viscosity at operating temperature, flow range, pressure, temperature, connection type, and hazardous area class. For a high viscosity positive displacement system, viscosity and flow range drive the meter size. Pressure drop across the meter must stay below 0.5 bar on thick oils.

We have seen this on customer sites many times. A paint manufacturer in Vietnam sent only DN40. The actual viscosity at 40 °C was 4200 cP. We selected a stainless steel oval gear meter with PTFE seals and a slower gear speed. The batch error dropped from 2.1 percent to 0.5 percent.

Digital Meter Outputs and Wiring

Digital does not mean only a number on screen. The meter can output pulse, 4-20 mA HART, or RS485 Modbus. For oil batching, pulse output gives clean volume totals. For continuous blending, a 4-20 mA HART signal talks directly to PLC or DCS.

Power supply is 24 V DC. Battery powered options exist for remote terminals without cabling. ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 2 versions are available for refinery and tank farm use. The display can be rotated and wired remote up to 30 meters away.

Material Selection for Oil Service

Gear material matters. Cast iron is common for diesel and heavy fuel oil. Stainless steel 316 suits food grade oil and palm oil. Aluminum is lighter and cheaper but not for water based fluids. Bearing material choices include ceramic, tungsten carbide, and carbon graphite. Seal options include FKM, PTFE, and EPDM.

A customer in Malaysia used DN40 aluminum meters for cooking oil transfer. After three months, the meter teeth showed wear because the oil contained fine particles. We changed th

Installation Notes for Thick Oil

Mount the meter below the pipe or at the same level. Keep the meter full of liquid. Air pockets cause over registration. A strainer or Y-type filter upstream protects the gears from weld slag and rust. On very thick oil, heat tracing keeps viscosity low enough for smooth rotation.

Do not use flexible hoses that collapse under suction. Inlet and outlet straight runs are not as critical for positive displacement meters as for turbine meters. A short straight run of 3 x DN upstream and 2 x DN downstream is enough.

Example Sizing Probes

Case 1. Heavy fuel oil 380 cSt at 50 °C, flow 10 to 100 L/min, pressure 16 bar, pipe DN50, flange connection, ATEX Zone 1. Result: DN50 cast iron oval gear meter with FKM seals and ceramic bearings, 4-20 mA HART plus pulse output, local display, 24 V DC.

Case 2. Diesel fuel 4 cP, flow 5 to 50 L/min, pressure 10 bar, pipe DN25, thread connection. Result: DN25 aluminum oval gear meter with Viton seals and pulse output. Accuracy better than 0.5 percent.

Case 3. Lubricating oil 220 cSt, flow 1 to 10 L/min, pressure 40 bar, pipe DN15, stainless steel body. Result: DN15 stainless steel positive displacement meter with PTFE seals and remote display.

How to Request a Sizing Quote

Send us your fluid type, viscosity in cP, operating temperature in °C, pressure in bar, pipe size in DN, flow range in L/h or kg/h, and required output. Tell us if the area is ATEX Zone 1 or Zone 2. We will reply with a meter model, probe sized for your flow range, and price in USD or AUD.

FAQ

Question: Can an oval gear flow meter handle high viscosity oil?
Answer: Yes. Oval gear flow meters measure oils from about 1 cP to 100000 cP. They are suitable for diesel, heavy fuel oil, lube oil, and food grade oil.

Question: What is the accuracy of a digital positive displacement oil flow meter?
Answer: Standard accuracy is ±0.5 percent of reading. High precision versions reach ±0.2 percent. Repeatability is ±0.03 percent.

Question: Do I need a strainer upstream?
Answer: Yes. Install a strainer or Y-type filter before the meter. Solid particles damage the gears and reduce accuracy.

Question: Can I use pulse output and 4-20 mA at the same time?
Answer: Yes. Many Silver Instruments oil meters support pulse and 4-20 mA HART in parallel. This gives local total and remote rate.

Question: How do I size a positive displacement meter for thick oil?
Answer: Provide viscosity at operating temperature, flow range, pressure, temperature, pipe size, and connection type. The meter is then selected to keep pressure drop below 0.5 bar and gear speed within range.
